  • This document is a collection of activities, methods, and explanations (all tools) for deepening connection to nature used by mentors. It is largely tailored for college professors, faculty, and students but can be used by anyone. It was specifically assembled for my alma mater, Central College.

  • It is inspired by: Coyote’s Guide to Nature Connection by Jon Young, Ellen Haas, and Evan McGown | What the Robin Knows, by Jon Young | Reconnecting with Nature by Michael J. Cohen | The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer and many other sources cited in the document.

Big rock park guides

Children and Young Adult Nature Guide

  • This is a digital version of a trifold brochure guide that was printed for the Pella Community School District. It includes basic wildlife species found in Big Rock Park (Pella, Iowa). These are common species that can be seen throughout the Midwest, so use is not limited to Iowa residents. Don’t overlook this guide as it still includes details that you may not know! Feel free to download and bring it with you to a local park or even your backyard.

  • The mentoring guide below is a companion to this guide in that it adds more detail as you are exploring natural areas with your family, friends, or yourself. It incorporates more nature connection mentoring strategies that you can take away and use in other areas of your life. The mentoring guide also shares more details about Big Rock Park and other natural areas to further enrich understanding and connection.

  • This guide is a companion to the brochure above. As mentioned, it dives into nature connection mentoring concepts and processes so you can strengthen your connection and help connect others!

  • It will discuss areas and species found in Big Rock Park (and similar ecosystems). Relevant advice and activities will be structured around Big Rock Park and the critters that live there.

  • It also includes additional resources such as books and immersive videos for further connective opportunities.

Pictured in the guide’s cover: (on the left) Dutchman’s Breeches, a spring ephemeral wildflower that grows plentifully at Big Rock Park. (On the right) is a young and seemingly curious White-tailed Deer.
